How to play Reversi
Flip your rival’s discs and own the board.
Goal
Reversi is played on a green 8×8 board. One side plays Black, the other White, and Black always moves first. The game starts with four discs placed diagonally in the centre. When the game ends, whoever has more discs on the board wins.
On your turn, place a disc on an empty square so that it traps at least one line of your opponent’s discs between the new disc and another of yours — horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Every trapped disc flips to your colour. One move can trap several lines at once, and all of them flip. If you have no legal move, you pass and your opponent plays again. When neither side can move (usually when the board is full), the game is over.
Controls
- Computer: click the square where you want to place a disc.
- Phone: tap the square. The squares are large and easy to hit.
- The small dots show every square you are allowed to play. Use 💡 Hints to show or hide them.
- The last disc played has a red dot in its centre, so you can see where your opponent just moved.
- Choose Vs computer (Easy / Medium / Hard, go first with Black or second with White) or Two players to play with a friend on the same device, taking turns.
- ↶ Undo takes back the last move (against the computer it also takes back the computer’s reply). The 🔊 button turns sound on or off.
- Your game is saved automatically — close the page and come back later to continue.
Tips
- Corners are the most valuable squares: a disc in a corner can never be flipped.
- Avoid the diagonal square next to an empty corner — it usually hands that corner to your opponent.
- In the opening and middle game, flipping lots of discs is not always good. Keep many options for yourself and leave few for your opponent.
- The end of the game is the time to grab as many discs as you can.
